General information

Master’s programme in Public Health at ISPHA is designed to provide a solid basis for successful research and practice in the field of Public Health.

The programme has been developed in accordance with the Russian federal standard of higher professional education 32.04.01 “Public Health”. The content of the programme meets the requirements of the Master of Public Health education in European countries and is in line with the Bologna recommendations.

The aim of the programme is to train professionals with a wide range of skills required for a successful professional career in Public Health. The graduates will be capable to perform comprehensive evaluation and monitoring of population health using various indicators, identify major public health problems, develop, implement and evaluate effectiveness of public health interventions.

The programme also enables graduates to perform high quality research both in public health and in other health-related areas. The programme puts special emphasis on developing practical skills to apply evidence-based methods in the field of Public Health.

The programme requires two years of full-time studies and is equivalent to 120 credits. One credit is equal to 36 academic hours including in-class education, home assignments, research work, practice and time spent on evaluation of knowledge. The credits are exchangeable with the European credits (ECTS).

ISPHA graduates receive Russian MPH diploma with appendixes in both Russian and English designed in accordance with the model developed by the European Commission, Council of Europe and UNESCO/CEPES.

Target audience

The programme is designed for those who are directly engaged or plan to get engaged in planning and carrying out health assessment, health promotion, disease prevention and health research. It can be particularly relevant to those who plan to continue their scientific carrier in the field of Public Health at the international level.


Diploma of higher education is a prerequisite for enrollment in the programme.

Applicants with non-medical background must have a bachelor's degree (or a specialist degree if the bachelor's degree was not available for the speciality at the time of commencement of the training). Applicants with medical background required to have specialist diploma.

All applicants should have good knowledge of English.

Duration of studies

Completion of the programme requires two and half years of part-time study or two years of full-time study.

In-class educational sessions do not exceed 16 academic hours per week. The total workload including self-studies does not exceed 54 academic hours per week. Students‘ self-studies organized and monitored using web-based technologies.

The first year of studies consists of courses in all mandatory disciplines as well as field work and pedagogical practice period. The second year consists of courses in four elective disciplines and research practice. The final semester is mostly devoted to writing of the Master’s thesis. 

Content of education

The programme includes both basicl and variative theoretical training, and some practices as well as the final MPH thesis, which is a culmination of the 2-years study period. 

Altogether, 60 credits must be obtained by taking the following theoretical courses:

1. General part (18 credits):

  • Introduction to Public Health 
  • Introduction to biostatistics 
  • Information technologies
  • Health economy and policy
  • Business and academic English 
  • Law and bioethics in public health
  • Health management and health administration 
  • Basics of health sociology, psychology, human ecology and quality of life
  • Scientific writing and presentation in Russian and English languages 
  • Fisrt aid and general care

2. Variative part:

  • Research methods in Public Health 
  • Epidemiology 
  • Biostatistics 
  • Health Promotion 
  • Health economics and health policy 

The remaining 12 credits can be obtained by taking 3 of the elective courses from the list below:

  • Qualitative research methods (4 credits)
  •  Addictive behavior and mental health (4 credits)
  •  Injury prevention and safety promotion (4 credits)
  •  Occupational health (4 credits)
  •  Environmental health (4 credits)
  •  Epidemiology of communicable diseases (4 credits)

Each student can at own expense take other courses offered by Nordic universities – members of the ISPHA international network.

3. Practice (46 credits)

  • Study practice (4 credits) 
  • Primary practical training (12 credits)
  • Research practice (30  credits)

Teaching staff

Most of the teaching process is provided by teachers employed at NSMU as well as professionals from Public Health organizations and institutions located in Arkhangelsk. More than 80% of lecturers have either Russian or international academic degrees. Professionals from European universities participate in teaching of some of the courses. 

Teaching venue

All courses are taught in the fully equipped ISPHA classroom at NSMU. Field work practice can be done at various medical institutions of the Arkhangelsk region, for example, at the regional medical informational-analytical center, Arkhangelsk regional center of medical prevention, etc. Research practice periods can be spent at different departments of NSMU.

Language of command

The sudy process is done in Russian. In case of 10 foreign students are applied program might be done in English. English skills are required because of involvement of international professionals in the teaching process and wide use of course literature in English. Teaching in English is an important part of the programme that is required for successful integration into international professional and scientific community.


In 2019, ISPHA can accept up to 25 students. Russian and international applicants can be admitted to the programme if they fulfill necessary requirements for Master’s education.
